Splitting PDFs and deleting pages: what to know
When splitting a PDF helps
Splitting is the quickest way to share only the part of a document someone needs: one chapter of a report, a single invoice from a monthly statement, the signature page of a contract, or the pages of a scan that belong to different people. Deleting pages is the reverse job: drop a blank page, an old cover sheet, or the instructions at the end of a form before you send it on.
How to type page numbers
List pages with commas and use a dash for a range, so 1,3,5-8 means pages 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Leave one side of the dash empty to run to the edge of the document: 10- is page 10 to the end, and -3 is pages 1 to 3. The word last stands for the final page, so 8-last also works. Spaces are ignored, and a page you list twice is only used once. Page numbers start at 1 and follow the order in a PDF viewer, not printed page labels.
The modes
Extract pages saves the pages you list as one PDF, in the order you type them, so 3,1,2 also moves page 3 to the front. Delete pages removes the pages you list and keeps the rest in their original order; it will not let you delete every page. One file per selected page saves each listed page as its own PDF. Split all pages does the same for the whole document, and Split every N pages cuts it into equal parts, such as files of 2 pages for a stack of double-sided forms.
Examples
To send pages 2, 5 and 9 of a report as one file, choose Extract pages and type 2,5,9. To remove a blank page 4 and the last two pages of a 20-page scan, choose Delete pages and type 4,19-20. To turn a 30-page batch of 3-page forms into ten files, choose Split every N pages and enter 3.
What is preserved and privacy
Pages are copied without being rasterized, so text stays searchable and images keep their quality. Each page keeps its own size and orientation. The original file is never changed; you always download new files. Everything runs in your browser, and no file is uploaded to a server. Password-protected PDFs have to be unlocked before they can be split.
