Editing PDF metadata: what to know
What PDF metadata is
Every PDF can carry document properties: title, author, subject, keywords, the application that created it, the software that produced it, and creation and modification dates. Viewers show the title in the window or tab, search tools and document management systems index these fields, and anyone can read them through the document properties dialog.
Why edit it
Metadata often leaks details you did not intend to share, such as a colleague's name as author, an internal file name as title, or the exact date a draft was created. Cleaning these fields before publishing or sending a PDF is a simple privacy step. Setting a clear title and keywords also helps when the PDF is published on a website or stored in a shared archive.
How to use it
Load a PDF and the current values appear in the form. Change or clear any field, then select Update Metadata and download the new file. The page content is not changed; only the document information is rewritten.
Privacy
The PDF is processed locally in your browser. Its properties are read and rewritten in memory on your device and the result is offered as a download. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so you can safely inspect documents you have received before deciding what to do with them.
Limits
Some PDFs also store an XMP metadata block that certain viewers read instead of the basic document properties; those viewers may still show older values. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked before their metadata can be edited.
