Choosing a password length and character mix
How the passwords are made
Each character is picked using crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure random source, from the sets you tick: uppercase, lowercase, digits and 26 symbols. Nothing is sent to a server, and the page works offline once loaded. Because the choice is random, no pattern ties one password to the next.
Length matters more than symbols
Each extra character multiplies the number of possibilities by the size of the pool. With all four sets there are 88 characters to draw from, about 6.5 bits per character, so 16 characters give roughly 103 bits. Using letters and digits only (62 characters, about 5.95 bits each) needs 18 characters to reach the same level. When a site caps length or rejects symbols, add characters rather than giving up on randomness.
Reading the strength meter
The meter estimates entropy as length times log2 of the pool size and sorts it into five bands: under 28 bits is weak, up to 36 fair, up to 60 good, up to 128 strong, and above that very strong. It assumes every character was chosen at random, which holds for passwords made here but not for ones you typed. It is a guide, not a guarantee.
Using them safely
Use a different password for every account and store them in a password manager rather than a note or a spreadsheet. A password that must be typed by hand, such as a Wi-Fi key or a device login, is easier with a long mix of letters and digits and no symbols. Turn on two-factor authentication where it is offered, since a strong password does not help if the site itself leaks it.
